A 30-year-old man, suspected to be a member of the Thak Thak gang, was arrested late Thursday for allegedly robbing an IPS rank officer of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) of Rs 95,000 while he was crossing the Burari flyover in his car on July 2.

The accused, Rohit, is a resident of Madangir in Ambedkar Nagar, said police. “Footage from multiple CCTV cameras was analysed to identify the accused. When we checked criminal records, it came to light that Rohit is part of the Thak Thak gang,” an officer said.

Rohit, police said, was among three persons who robbed the NIA officer while he was on his way home in a private vehicle around 9 pm. “Rohit, who was on a bike, signaled to the officer to stop his car… When the NIA officer rolled down his window, Rohit pointed at the fuel tank, signalling it was leaking. The officer ordered his driver to stop,” the police said.

“As the car stopped on the flyover and the officer got out, Rohit also stopped his bike and started pouring oil into the engine of the officer’s vehicle. He was trying to show there was a problem with the car… In the meantime, two more bike-borne men arrived. They pushed the officer to the ground and fled with his bag that was kept in the car, which contained a laptop and Rs 95,000 in cash,” an officer said.

Police said that after some time, the robbers returned from the opposite lane of the flyover to place the bag on the divider. The bag, however, only had the laptop and no cash.

When contacted, the NIA Public Relations Officer refused to comment on the issue.
