The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has convened a meeting of stakeholders on May 5 in order to devise an “effective” mechanism to solve the noise pollution problem caused due to heavy traffic near Panchsheel Park in South Delhi.

Earlier, the Tribunal had directed authorities to declare the area a “no-horn” zone, to install necessary boards at selected locations, and to confine the speed of vehicles in the area to 30 km per hour.

It had also directed the installation of speed cameras to monitor vehicles and asked residents to insulate the windows of their houses. It also asked residents to employ methods like vegetative boundaries to confine the noise.

Noting that “parties (were) eager to find a real solution”, the bench directed the Chief Secretary of Delhi government, officers of various concerned departments and members of the Panchshila Enclave Co-operative House Building Society to be present on May 5 at 4 pm in the NGT’s conference room.

“We, therefore, direct issuance of notice to the elected managing committee members of Panchshila Society informing them of the meeting,” the bench said.

The directions came while hearing a petition by Panchsheel Park resident Omesh Saigal, who had alleged that noise pollution generated due to heavy traffic flow on the Outer Ring road was affecting the health of residents.

The Delhi Pollution Control Committee had also informed the Tribunal that roadside noise levels near Panchsheel Park were beyond permissible limits.
