Delhi recorded the highest fatalities in road crashes last year as compared to other cities, according to the latest NCRB report. It stated that 4,720 accidents took place in 2021 as compared to 5,560 accidents last year — a 17% uptick.
Among the victims of these accidents, the majority of them were pedestrians — 355 were left injured while 98 died. Data showed that most such accidents took place in the winter, with 480 cases in November and 509 in December. As for time, most accidents (834) took place between 9 pm and 1 am.
Senior traffic police officers said, “Pedestrians are the most vulnerable victims of vehicles that crash due to speeding or rash driving… most incidents take place at night as there are high chances of drunken driving then.”
An officer said almost 20 blackspots where most road crashes take place have been identified by the Traffic Police, which was largely due to inefficient infrastructure and lack of enforcement of traffic laws.
“Subways have been constructed at most junctions where there are chances of pedestrians falling victim to car crashes. Traffic signal duration (of the red light) has also been increased to help pedestrians cross the road. Traffic inspectors have also been briefed to carry out thorough checking of vehicles and their drivers at checkpoints at night to check cases of drunken driving,” said another traffic officer.
