A month after a constable managed to nab three burglary suspects following an intense chase in South Delhi when he was out on the patrolling duty alone, he was granted an out-of-turn promotion on Wednesday by Police Commissioner Satish Golcha at a ceremony held at Delhi Police Headquarters. Golcha congratulated Constable Kartar Singh, who is now the Head Constable, and wished him a bright career.

This is the first out-of-turn promotion that has been granted by Gocha since he took charge as the Delhi Police chief last month. During a recent meeting, Golcha had emphasied on giving out-of-turn promotions and rewarding those who are doing good work at the junior level.

On August 1, around 4 am, Constable Kartar Singh was patrolling in Malviya Nagar when he spotted three men riding a motorcycle and suspected foul play. They wore small turbans, carried a backpack, and had their faces covered.

Singh recalled that Station House Officer (SHO) Vinay Yadav had recently warned the personnel at the Malviya Nagar police station about three wanted criminals accused of carrying out multiple burglaries in the area. During briefings, Yadav had described the suspects and their attire in detail. The Constable remembered seeing the surveillance footage shown during the briefings. Like many of his colleagues, he was actively on lookout for the trio during the night patrols.

When told to stop, the suspects ignored Singh. In what turned out to be a scene straight out of a Bollywood action movie, he then chased the suspects for 35 minutes across 7 km and finally caught them. “When I spotted them, I tried to flag them down, but they sped off. They headed towards the Savitri Flyover, then the IIT Flyover, took a right turn, and moved towards Aurobindo Marg, eventually reaching near Hauz Khas and tried to enter Khel Gaon,” Singh recounted.

The night had already been eventful. Earlier, Singh and his patrolling partner Constable Mainpal had tried to catch another suspect but he gave them a slip. Then the motorcycle they were riding had to be replaced.

Singh spotted the three men after he replaced the motorcycle. He had dropped his colleague midway, as Mainpal needed to use the washroom.
