Six-time world boxing champion Mary Kom’s residence in Faridabad’s Sector 46 was allegedly robbed this week, police said on Saturday. Officers said they reached the house on Saturday evening after she reported the burglary that took place on September 24.
The incident took place when the Olympian was in Meghalaya, attending an international half marathon event in Sohra, police said.
“She had locked the house and was not present at the time. She informed us that robbers had entered her residence. A team has reached the location and initiated an investigation. An FIR will be registered based on the findings. We are reviewing CCTV footage and determining what was stolen and how the burglary was carried out,” said a police spokesperson. She said she was alerted to the incident by her neighbours.
Mangte Chungneijang “Mary” Kom, who hails from Manipur, is the only woman to win the World Amateur Boxing Championship six times and the only female boxer to earn a medal in each of the first seven World Championships.
She was the first Indian female boxer to qualify for the 2012 Summer Olympics, where she competed in the flyweight (51 kg) category and won a bronze medal.
Mary Kom was ranked the world’s No. 1 female light-flyweight by the International Boxing Association (AIBA). She also became the first Indian female boxer to win gold at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, and at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Additionally, she is the only boxer to win the Asian Amateur Boxing Championship six times.
