The Gurgaon police have arrested a man from Gujarat for allegedly threatening YouTuber and Bigg Boss OTT 2 winner Elvish Yadav with an extortion bid of Rs 1 crore.

According to ACP (Crime) Varun Dahiya, on Wednesday, Yadav, a resident of Wazirabad, filed a written complaint with the Sector-53 Police Station, stating that when he returned to India with his friend who worked as his manager on October 17, after a trip to London, he received multiple threatening messages demanding money on WhatsApp. The messages initially demanded Rs 40 lakh of Yadav. But later, the accused increased the amount to Rs 1 crore, threatening violence if the money was not paid.

The police registered a case under sections 384 (punishment for extortion.) and 387 (putting person in fear of death or of grievous hurt, in order to commit extortion) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The police identified and arrested the accused, Saqeer Makrani, 25, a resident of Vadnagar in Gujarat, who worked as an agent at the Regional Transport Office (RTO). The arrest was made in coordination with the Gujarat Police.

“The accused was impressed by Yadav and his lifestyle. He had been harbouring the dream of being a millionaire from childhood. He thought that this was an easy way to earn. We will take action against the accused and avoid such incidents in the future. We will question him further to understand the modus operandi and motive behind the crime,” ACP Dahiya said.

According to the police, during initial questioning, the accused revealed that he watched a video on Yadav’s YouTube channel, which inspired him to plan an extortion scheme to become wealthy. He purchased a fake SIM card for Rs 1,400 and used it to send threatening messages to carry out the extortion, the police said.

The police seized the fake SIM card and a mobile phone used by the accused to carry out the extortion from his possession.
