Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) has called for a strike on Monday as the Academic Council meets to discuss policy issues. Classes are likely to be cancelled and a protest demonstration is planned outside the School of Social Sciences, the venue of the Academic Council meet, union members said.

Meanwhile,33 students, led by the union, continued their hunger strike for the fourth consecutive day outside the administrative block on Sunday. They are demanding that the Academic Council include five demands forwarded by the union in its agenda. This includes a demand for reducing the percentage of viva marks from 30 to 15 per cent in accordance with a November 1980 Supreme Court judgment.

Students alleged that the high percentage of marks for viva-voce led to “discrimination” against reserved category students. “We have compiled data provided to us by the administration, which shows that students from marginalised section of the society did poorly,” said JNUSU President Sucheta De.

Dean of Students Abdul Nafey, however, refused to comment on the issue.
