A day after 21-year-old IIT-Delhi student Anil Kumar allegedly died by suicide in his hostel room, officials at the institute claimed that he did not approach the SC/ST cell to register any grievance or pursue counselling services at the institute. Kumar, who belonged to the SC community, was pursuing BTech in Mathematics and Computing, and had lost his father recently.
“Despite continuous efforts towards sensitisation, we still need to do better as students are not coming forward with their issues… We have found out that the student hailed from Banda district in Uttar Pradesh and lost his father a couple of months ago. He did not go home for Rakhi celebrations either. We spoke to his friends and family and it was an unfortunate incident as no one saw this coming,” said an official from IIT-Delhi.
Officials also stated that the student belonged to the 2019 batch and had completed four years at the institute but did not meet the credits required to graduate which may have caused pressure. He had been at the institute on an extension.
In an email to students following Kumar’s death, IIT-Delhi Director Rangan Banerjee wrote, “With a very heavy heart, it is my unfortunate duty to inform you of the very sad and untimely demise of a young member of our community, Anil Kumar… a resident of Vindhyachal hostel… Unfortunately, Anil was found… (dead) in his room, which was locked from inside. The police have taken custody of his mortal remains. This tragic loss is also compounded by the fact that Anil belonged to the SC community.”
The email further said that a condolence meeting will be organised next week and requested students to utilise the institute’s counselling services.
A few weeks ago, referring to mental health initiatives at the institute, Banerjee had stated that they were enhancing counselling. He also said they have revamped the examination system to reduce pressure on students.
A senior police officer said, “So far no foul play has emerged nor have we recovered any suicide note… It has come to light that the student was not performing well due to which he had mental trauma… His body has been kept at Safdarjung Hospital and his parents have been informed. Further probe is ongoing.”
