Gurgaon man assaulted over theft, video viral: Main accused arrested

Two days after the police took suo motu cognizance of a viral video that captured the brutal assault of a man at an under-construction society in Gurgaon, the fifth and the main accused in the case has been arrested, officers said on Wednesday.

A joint team from the Sector-10 Crime Branch and the Sector-10 Police Station arrested Yogendra Bhati (49), who hails from Greater Noida, on Wednesday. He was working as a contractor at the site where the alleged assault took place, said officers.

This comes a day after the police had arrested four persons working at the site – Pushpendra (39), Ajit Singh (38), Krishna Kumar (19), and Amit Kumar (39). While Pushpendra worked and Krishna worked as security guards, and Amit and Ajit as security supervisors, said officers.

The victim was employed as an excavator operator at the site, police said, adding that he was accused of stealing electric wires in June by the group.

The man, who hails from Rajasthan, was seen tied up, hung upside down in the viral clip. The video showed him in tears, pleading in broken voice while being struck by what appeared to be thin steel rods.

His statement in the matter was recorded on Wednesday, said officers. Bhati allegedly led the assault. The police will present him in a court on Thursday, a spokesperson said, adding that further investigation is underway.
