Delhi government has started preparations to not let dengue become an epidemic like last year, Health Minister Satyendar Jain said Tuesday. The government will take charge of the measures, he said, indicating the possibility that funds for fogging may not be released to municipal corporations.

“We have started preparing for dengue. To curb any epidemic, one can do two things – first is take precautionary steps, and second, cure it. Government did the curing part well last year. Precautionary steps, measures were in the hands of the municipal corporations,” he said.

“We give them (corporations) Rs 100 crore and then everything comes back to us when it comes to action. Why will we give charity of such an amount?”

On data given by the corporations, he said, “People said they went to every household four times. Commissioner-level officials said people had gone seven times to people’s houses, but everything was on paper. We saw how many times they went…”

Jain added, “Fogging is done when there are mosquitoes. Only fully grown mosquitoes can be affected by the fogging. We will take everything into our hands this time. Dengue should not become an epidemic.”
