After evading arrest for nine years by frequently changing mobile numbers and locations, a woman who allegedly posed as a gynecologist was arrested on Tuesday for conducting a botched surgery in 2009 and causing the patient’s death, said police.
“She frequently changed her number and the location. Presently, she was working as a caretaker to a senior citizen in Greater Kailash-II,” said DCP (Crime) Aditya Gautam.
On September 22, 2029, Ramesh Kumar admitted his pregnant wife, who had persistent abdominal pain, to the clinic operated by the accused in West Delhi’s Vikas Nagar, said police. Three days later, his wife was operated upon. But she died within two weeks allegedly due to the botched surgery.
After the death of Ramesh Kumar’s wife, legal proceedings were initiated against the accused and it was found that she had a forged degree, police said. “It was revealed that the accused did not have a valid degree and she had obtained a forged BAMS degree. She was arrested in the case in 2011. After obtaining bail, she did not turn up for the trial and was declared person-of-interest by the court in 2016,” said DCP Gautam.
The accused worked as an assistant to a doctor in Delhi in 2005.
“She learned basic treatment at that clinic. She then arranged for a forged BAMS degree from Bihar and in 2008, started her clinic as a gynecologist in Vikas Nagar,” DCP Gautam said.
A team from the Crime Branch got a tip-off about the presence of the accused in Greater Kailash. The police conducted a raid at a home in GK-II on Tuesday and arrested her.
