A 52-year-old salesman at a government-run wine shop in Northwest Delhi’s Nimri Colony was attacked and stabbed multiple times on Sunday evening, police said. Police arrested Akbar (27) and Rehan (19) on Monday.
The incident took place around 8.30 pm at the C-8 wine shop in Bharat Nagar, where the victim, Gyanpal Singh (42), was on duty.
According to police, a group of four men entered the shop armed with knives and a baseball bat and assaulted Singh.
CCTV footage from the premises showed the men entering the shop with their faces covered before cornering Singh against a counter. They then inflicted repeated blows with the bat and stabbed Singh as people shouted for them to stop.
Singh was rushed to Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital with multiple stab injuries. Police said he is currently unfit to give a detailed statement. Police have recorded the version of eyewitnesses, including the shop manager, and are verifying their accounts.
A crime team, along with forensic experts, inspected the spot. “Preliminary enquiry suggests that old enmity could be behind the attack. One suspect has emerged, and efforts are on to trace him. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and further investigation is underway,” a senior police officer said.
“During the course of interrogation, the accused persons submitted that one person namely Hunny called the accused person Akbar and others and invited him for a party at his office at Bunkar Colony. On this accused Akbar alongwith accused Rehan reached at the office at Bunkar Colony, where other 5-6 accused persons who were the residents of Jahangirpuri were also present there. After having 1-2 drinks to all the persons accused Hunny elaborated to them the plan to murder victim Gyan Pal Singh…Thereafter, accused persons Akbar, along with other accused persons entered the liquor shop and stabbed the victim multiple times and after the incident all the accused persons ran away from the place of incident,” said DCP North West, Bhisham Singh.
On Friday, a similar incident led to the death of a temple sewadar in Southeast Delhi’s Kalkaji. Yogendra Singh (35) was beaten to death by a group of men who were frequent patrons of the temple.
According to the police, the men and the sewadar had frequent run-ins and arguments in the weeks leading up to the attack. The victim allegedly manhandled the men during his crowd management duties in the temple. On Friday, the victim allegedly refused to give the men prasad after saying that the temple had run out of it.
