The Pusa bio-decomposer, a microbial solution which is expected to help with the decomposition of paddy stubble after the harvest and before the sowing of the rabi crop, will be sprayed on around 5,000 acres of land in Delhi this year, Environment Minister Gopal Rai’s office said on Thursday.

The Delhi government has formed 13 teams to conduct the exercise that will begin from parts of North Delhi on Friday.

The decomposer will be sprayed for free on all basmati and non-basmati paddy fields in the city, with the process beginning from Tigipur near Narela on Friday. It will also prevent the burning of stubble.

“We received positive results the previous year, the stubble was decomposed properly and there was an increase in the fertility of the fields. Another problem faced by farmers is that the time interval between the harvesting of paddy crops and sowing of wheat is very short. Therefore, the government has started preparations to conduct the spraying process in time so that farmers get better results,” Rai said.

This is the fourth consecutive year that the Delhi government will be spraying the solution on paddy fields after harvest. Last year, it was sprayed on around 4,400 acres of land, out of a targeted 5,000 acres.

Rai added that paddy is cultivated only in “some parts” in the national capital and efforts are on to ensure that there is no pollution from stubble burning in Delhi.

Meanwhile, the AQI in Delhi on Thursday was 220 in the ‘poor’ category.
