Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday inaugurated an automated puzzle car parking facility at the Punjabi Bagh Cremation Ground to ease the traffic congestion in the area.

Built by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi for Rs 31 crore, the facility has a capacity to accommodate 225 cars on an area of 3,000 sq metres.

CM Gupta said that parking has long been a major source of conflict and stress in Delhi, and hence the government aims to ensure modern parking facilities in all areas to bring relief to people and strengthen the city’s image as a modern and well-organised capital.

“Citizens were forced to park their vehicles on roadsides, which caused traffic disruptions and daily disputes. Automated parking facilities, therefore, are the need of the hour,” she said.

The inauguration of the parking facility is part of the ongoing ‘Sewa Pakhwada’ being observed from September 17 to October 2 to mark the birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. CM Gupta also laid the foundation stone of another advanced automated multi-level puzzle car parking facility at Bharat Darshan Park, Punjabi Bagh.

Taking a dig at the previous government, the CM said the previous government had thrown Delhi into disarray and brought development to a complete standstill.

Addressing the problem of traffic congestion on the Ring Road, Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood said the people who come to pay their last respects to their loved ones at the cremation ground often suffer due to a lack of parking facilities. “He said the blame lies not with the people but with the previous governments that failed to address these pressing issues,” he said.

Puzzle parking system is an intelligent, automated, multi-level parking system that is designed to optimise space usage to park the maximum number of cars efficiently through horizontal and vertical movements.

According to MCD, the project has been constructed with nine modules, with separate levels for SUVs and sedan cars. “Vehicle owners will only need to park their car on the platform, and the system will automatically park it safely without any human intervention, the project’s biggest highlight,” an officer said, adding that the average retrieval time for any car is 150 seconds.

Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh said that the new facility is not just a parking space but a blend of technology and good governance. “The operations and maintenance for the next 10 years have also been arranged, ensuring that citizens do not face any inconvenience,” he said.

The upcoming facility at Bharat Darshan Park will cover an area of 1,500 sq metres and will comprise 8 modules with a total capacity of 188 vehicles, said an MCD officer. It will be built at a cost of about ₹31.65 crore.
