Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) commandoes have once again become a part of Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s inner security ring.
While the Delhi Police’s Z-plus security cover to Gupta continues, the inner members of the Close Protection Team (CPT) now include CRPF personnel, official sources said.
The decision was taken following a direction from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) after a threat assessment concerning the Delhi chief minister.
Last month, on August 20, Gupta was attacked by a man from Gujarat during a Jan Sunwai programme at her Camp Office. The accused and his friend were arrested and booked on criminal conspiracy charges, among others.
After the attack, the Union Home Ministry had considered assigning Gupta’s security to the CRPF, which provides Z and Z-plus security to several protectees across the country. The CRPF was, in fact, briefly included in the Delhi Police security ring around Gupta for a day. However, it was decided that the Delhi Police would continue to handle her security, but with an enhanced arrangement.
A CPT comprising four to six armed bodyguards forming a protective ring around the chief minister when she attends any public event was added to the Z-plus security cover by the Delhi Police last month.
The members of the CPT team, who are part of the 50-odd personnel assigned to provide Gupta Z-plus security cover, form the first layer of protection around her during public meetings and events and will stop anyone trying to approach her, an officer said. Overall, around two dozen security personnel are on duty, in round-the-clock shifts, the officer added.
The Delhi Police will handle Gupta’s outer security ring. Delhi Police personnel will be responsible for frisking visitors and checking the chief minister’s house and Camp Office.
