A young couple had just purchased a brand-new Mahindra Thar from a showroom in East Delhi’s Nirman Vihar. They were sitting in the SUV, with a showroom employee, when the car owner accidentally pressed the accelerator — sending the vehicle flying out of the showroom’s first floor and crashing onto the pavement below.
The incident took place on Monday evening, police said. No injuries were reported in the incident.
According to officers, a call was received from Malik Hospital in Nirman Vihar regarding a patient, Maani Pawar (29), a resident of Indirapuram in Ghaziabad.
During the enquiry, police said it was found that she and her husband, Pradeep, had bought a Thar Rox from the Shiva Auto Car Mahindra showroom in Nirman Vihar. The vehicle, which was displayed on the first floor, was being handed over to the couple at the time, said police.
Police said Maani, her husband, and a showroom employee identified as Vikas were seated inside the SUV.
According to police, the car owner had just completed the purchase and was performing a customary ritual inside the first-floor showroom — where a lemon is squeezed under the car’s tyre — when he mistakenly pressed the accelerator.
A video of the crash’s aftermath showing the upturned car on the road below the showroom soon went viral on social media.
None of the occupants or passersby was hurt. A motorcycle parked nearby suffered minor damage.
Police said no complaint has been lodged by the family or the showroom.
