Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi announced on Thursday that auto tippers will be sent even at night to pick up garbage from wards that are facing a waste collection issue. The decision was taken during a meeting with Shahdara South Zone councillors at the Civic Centre.
“The councillors informed the mayor about the problems in their ward… that garbage remains scattered…,” the mayor’s office said in a press statement. “Through this, it will be ensured that garbage is not lying anywhere,” Oberoi said.
Currently, a contractor, Metro Waste Company, is responsible for collecting garbage but the waste remains scattered in areas due to ragpickers. As this causes trouble for locals, the mayor instructed the deputy commissioner to place cement blocks before such waste collection spots so that the garbage does not spill out.
Oberoi further announced that an agency will be appointed for the maintenance of parks and pruning of trees.
Councillors also informed the mayor about the problem of stray animals and illegal dairies. They said that stray animals roam on the roads leading to traffic jams. Oberoi instructed the officers concerned to work towards solving the problem. Officials from the veterinary department said they only have two vehicles to pick up stray animals and only 10-12 animals will fit in one vehicle at a time.
