Cremations at Nigambodh Ghat, Delhi’s largest cremation ground, have been suspended after Yamuna floodwater entered the premises on Wednesday afternoon. A wall in the premises, around 7 to 8 ft high, was damaged from the top, with about two feet collapsing, allowing the Yamuna water to enter, said officials.
Located along the Ring Road behind the Red Fort, Nigambodh Ghat, with a capacity of 42 cremation platforms, is the city’s oldest and busiest cremation ground. On average, it handles 55 to 60 cremations daily. During the flood of 2023, it was shut for around a week after Yamuna waters entered its premises.
MCD Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma said cremations were stopped from 6 pm. “For the coming two days, till the water recedes, people can use the Ajmal Khan cremation ground… We have also closed the Geeta Colony cremation ground,” she added.
