Calm winds and foggy conditions on Thursday worsened the air quality index (AQI) in the Capital, prompting the Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas (CAQM) to invoke Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage III anti-pollution curbs with immediate effect.
While the AQI was 297 (poor category) on Wednesday, it increased to 357 in the ‘very poor’ category on Thursday. Restrictions under GRAP III entail a hybrid model of classes for up to Class V in schools, a ban on the plying of BS III petrol and BS IV diesel vehicles, and a ban on all demolition works and mining activities in the National Capital Region. The IMD has forecast rain over the weekend.
