The student wing of the Aam Aadmi Party, Academic and Students’ Association for Progress (ASAP), will contest the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections this year, the outfit informed in a press statement on Friday.
ASAP says it wants to break the hold of “national political outfits and power brokers” over student leadership. “Leadership must rest in the hands of students who are sincere, academically capable, hard-working, and committed to improving their college and university,” the group stated.
Unlike traditional ticket distribution driven, ASAP’s process will be fully transparent and merit-based. No money will be demanded, no caste will be considered, and no political connections will be required, the statement added. “All students, regardless of language, religion, caste, or economic background, will have a fair chance,” the ASAP announced.
The statement further said that in order to contest under the ASAP banner, a student has to fill out a registration form by August 25, submit a one-minute video or audio explaining their reasons and issues for contesting and provide a written agenda of 200–500 words.
For college union elections, candidates need support from at least 10 students across five sections, while DUSU candidates must secure backing from 50 students from five different colleges. All candidates must also have full attendance, no backlogs, and no disciplinary or criminal records, the statement specified.
