Donate match earnings to Pahalgam widows: AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj dares Suryakumar Yadav

This came days after Suryakumar Yadav refused the customary handshake with his Pakistani counterpart and dedicated the victory to the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack.

Aam Aadmi Party leader Saurabh Bharadwaj has dared Suryakumar Yadav, the captain of Indian Men’s T20I cricket team, to donate the earnings from the Asia Cup India-Pakistan match to the “widows of Pahalgam”. This came days after Yadav refused the customary handshake with his Pakistani counterpart Salman Ali Agha and dedicated the victory to the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack.

Bharadwaj, a former Delhi minister in the AAP Cabinet, criticised Yadav while speaking to reporters Wednesday. “Keh diya ji, bada accha hay bada sasta hay kehna: Ki ye jeet jo hay main shaheedon ko dedicate karta hun. Are bahut badhiya, tum bahut samajhdar ho. Agar hay tumhari aukaat…kya naam hay inka…Suryakumar Yadav, agar tumhari aukaat hay, aur tumhari BCCI ki aukaat hay aur tumhari ICC ki aukaat hay to main tumhe dusri chunauti bhi dete hain…Jitna paisa tumne in broadcasting rights se kamaya hay, in advertisers se kamaya hay, aur is pure ke pure dhande main cricket ke aapne kamaya hay de do un shaheedon ki widhwaon ko. Ham bhi maan jayenge ki tumne dedicate kiya hay. Himmat nahi hay. Aukaat nahi hay. Aap farji main kuch bhi bol do. Ye hamne usko dedicate kar diya. Bohot sharm ki baat hay.”

(You just said it. It is easy to make claims that we dedicate this victory to the martyrs. Very good, you are very smart. I dare you, Suryakumar Yadav, that if you have the guts, if BCCI has guts and ICC has guts, I give you another challenge: Give all the money you earned from the broadcasting rights, from advertisers and from the business of cricket to the widows of the [Pahalgam] martyrs. We will also accept your dedication. You don’t have the courage. You don’t have the guts. You lie that I dedicate this. It’s very shameful.)

Yadav hasn’t responded to Bharadwaj’s barb so far.

What Suryakumar Yadav said after India-Pak match

During the post-match press conference, Yadav was asked about his decision to walk away without the customary handshake twice: once after the toss right at the start of the match and then after the match got over. Yadav said he believed that “I feel few things, few things in life are ahead of sportsmen’s spirit also”.

“We stand with the families of victims of the Pahalgam attack. We express our solidarity and we want to dedicate today’s win to the Armed Forces,” he said.

How Pakistan responded

Pakistan didn’t take well to India’s gesture and lodged an official protest. Pakistan skipper Agha also gave the post-match press conference a miss. An official statement from the Pakistani team said: “Team manager Naveed Cheema lodged a strong protest against Indian players’ behaviour of not shaking hands. It was deemed as unsporting and against the spirit of the game. As a protest we did not send our captain to the post-match ceremony.”
