The Delhi government Monday termed as “illegal” the Delhi Metro’s decision to approach the Centre, for “legal opinion” on the Delhi government’s proposal to nominate AAP functionaries Atishi, Raghav Chadha, Jasmine Shah and Rajya Sabha MP N D Gupta’s son Naveen Gupta to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) board of directors.
In a strongly worded letter to DMRC chief Mangu Singh, Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot said if “this state of affairs continues”, the Delhi government would hold the former “liable”. Currently, the Delhi government has no nominated director in the DMRC board — in which the state and the Centre are equal shareholders.
On November 7, The Indian Express had reported that the DMRC board decided to approach the Centre for legal opinion. “The decision to nominate the four names was taken by the Delhi government. We brought it in the meeting of the board. The board decided that the central government should be approached for a legal opinion,” Singh had told The Indian Express.
Gahlot, in the letter, said: “I would like to state it on record that the decisions taken by the DMRC board, without inviting representatives of the Delhi government, are illegal and void ab-initio… I have no hesitation in saying that if this state of affairs continues, the Delhi government would hold the MD of DMRC liable.”
The corporation’s board, which has a sanctioned strength of 17, is chaired by the secretary of the Union Ministry for Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
