A 23-year-old man from Kanpur was arrested on Thursday for allegedly impersonating a Lieutenant in the Army’s Para Commando unit, also known as the Para (Special Forces), and duping a woman of over Rs 70,000 by promising her marriage.
The accused, Deepanshu, was arrested after the complainant – Damini (28) from Shahdara – approached the police.
Officers said Damini, who runs a medical store in Noida, met Deepanshu through a relative at a wedding. Introducing himself as a Lieutenant in the Army, Deepanshu claimed to be part of the Para (Special Forces).
Police said Deepanshu even met Damini several times wearing the uniform of an Army Lieutenant to bolster his claim. Trusting him, Damini started a relationship with him and allegedly gave him around Rs 70,000, both in cash and via online transfers.
However, she soon grew suspicious of Deepanshu and on September 1, when he came to meet her, Damini called the police control room, said police. Following this, Deepanshu was booked.
DCP (Shahdara) Parshant Gautam told mediapersons, “His father had retired as a Havaldar from the Army. Deepanshu had sat for the NDA (National Defence Academy) examination but could not clear it. He was afraid to disclose this to his family. So, he took out the list of NDA examination passouts from an online portal, which also carried the name of one Deepanshu. He showed it to his parents and left home saying that he is going to NDA Khadakwasla (Pune) for training.”
“Deepanshu then stayed in Kanpur doing odd jobs. One day, he met the complainant at a wedding and told her the same lie,” he added.
Police said a scrutiny of his cellphone revealed multiple photographs of Deepanshu dressed in Para (Special Forces) uniform, along with fake documents, including an appointment letter and the NDA rank list. The Lieutenant’s uniform and a fake military identity card has been recovered from him, police added.
