A Delhi Court on Thursday directed the Delhi Police to register an FIR against various men accused of giving hate speech during the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots, which left 53 dead and 700 injured.
“It is hereby directed that the SHO (Station House Officer), police station Karawal Nagar, shall register a separate FIR based on the complainant’s complaint and shall proceed to conduct a fair investigation in accordance with law. However, it is hereby clarified that no direction is being given to him to immediately arrest any accused person,” said Judicial Magistrate First Class Isra Zaidi of Karkardooma Courts in her order dated July 24.
“In view of the above discussion, this court is satisfied that the complaint discloses commission of cognizable offences and that the police have failed to act upon the same appropriately at the relevant time. Accordingly, the application stands allowed,” the judge said while hearing a complaint filed by Rahees Ahmed.
“In the present case, the complainant’s allegations disclose commission of grave and cognizable offences. The complainant has made serious allegations of communal violence, looting, arson, hate speech, naming specific individuals with their detailed roles,” the court added.
Ahmed has alleged that his family was subjected to a violent attack by a mob. He also claimed that the attackers, armed with weapons like lathis, iron rods, and petrol bombs, raised provocative slogans and used hate speech with the intention to incite violence and instill fear. Ahmed further accused the mob of vandalising and looting his house.
