Two suspected sharpshooters of the Nandu–Venkat Garg gang were arrested after a brief exchange of fire with the Delhi Police’s Special Cell in Rohini’s Sector 28 early on Saturday.

The police said that both men were injured in the crossfire and were rushed to Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital.

Two sophisticated automatic pistols, including a Glock 17 and a Star, along with seven live cartridges and four empty cartridges, were recovered from their possession, said the police.

The accused have been identified as Harshdeep, 20, a resident of Ambala Cantt in Haryana, and his cousin Naveen Dhiman, 24, from Panipat.

The police said the men were wanted in a firing case linked to an extortion registered at Chhawla police station earlier this week.

“Specific information was received that Harshdeep and Naveen Dhiman would be visiting Rohini Sector 28 in the intervening night of August 29-30, to meet their associate. Accordingly, a trap was laid by the Special Cell team. Once the accused were spotted, they were signalled to stop and surrender. However, the accused opened fire on the police team without any provocation,” said Pramod Kushwaha, Additional Commissioner of Police.

The police said Harshdeep was a school dropout and had come in contact with gangster Venkat Garg through social media. “He was lured by the promise of a job in a foreign country and hence he began committing crimes as part of the gang’s activities. He was tasked by Kapil alias Nandu to fire shots at Chhawala premises of a targeted businessman,” said Kushwaha.

His cousin Naveen, who completed a BSc in Computer Science from a Panipat college, was allegedly lured by the promise of easy money, said the police.

The police have registered a case under sections 132 for assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty; 221 for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of their public functions, and 109(1) for attempted murder of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) along with Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act at Special Cell police station.
