16-year-old girl killed after e-rickshaw overturns in Central Delhi; driver held

With the help of bystanders, the accused driver was apprehended on the spot and the e-rickshaw was seized, officers added.

DelhiAccording to the police, the road accident took place at Paharganj Chowk.

On her way to school, a 16-year-old girl was killed after the e-rickshaw she was travelling in overturned in Central Delhi’s Paharganj area on Tuesday morning. The e-rickshaw driver has been apprehended, said police. Three other passengers, including two school-going girls, sustained injuries, said officers.

According to the police, the road accident took place at Paharganj Chowk. A police team immediately reached the spot, and all four injured passengers — an adult and three school students— were taken to the hospital, officers said.

With the help of bystanders, the accused driver was apprehended on the spot and the e-rickshaw was seized, officers added.

Based on the statement of the fourth passenger, Mohammed Zahid, a case was registered at Paharganj police station. In his complaint, Zahid said that he was travelling in the e-rickshaw around 7:30 am when the vehicle, which was also carrying three girls, overturned.

“The rickshaw driver, identified as Dilip (46), allegedly drove negligently and at high speed, crossing a red light without looking. The accident, which occurred near Paharganj Chowk, resulted in injuries to all passengers. One of the girls suffered a head injury with significant bleeding, while the other two also sustained injuries. Zahid also suffered a leg injury,” said Nidhin Valsan, DCP, Central.
