The Karnataka government has issued an order prohibiting the use of mobile phones in all of the nearly 35,000 temples across the state that fall under the jurisdiction of the department of Religious and Charitable Endowments, commonly known as the Muzrai department.

The department has released a circular, dated July 17, instructing temple authorities to display signboards informing devotees about the restriction.

The government’s decision to implement the ban is based on the observation that the use of mobile phones in temples has been on the rise, causing disturbances to both temple staff and fellow worshippers, as per the circular. Therefore, individuals are now directed to switch off their mobile phones while inside temple premises.

The order, signed by the additional secretary of the Muzrai department, mandates that temple administrators arrange for the display of these instructions on signboards within the temple premises. However, the specifics regarding the implementation of the ban and the actions to be taken against those who do not comply with it have not been clearly outlined.

Temples under the Muzrai department are categorised into three sections based on revenue generation. Category ‘A’ comprises 201 temples that generate over Rs 25 lakh per year, category ‘B’ includes 139 temples with an annual revenue exceeding Rs 5 lakh, and the remaining 34,223 temples are classified under category ‘C’.
