A four-member gang, posing as government officials, allegedly stormed into a residence at Yelahanka in Bengaluru and made away with Rs 1.5 crore in cash and 50 grams of gold jewellery on Friday.

According to the police, the gang arrived in an Innova car fitted with a fake number plate at the residence of one Giriraj at around 7.45 am. Claiming to be from a government department, the men forced their way into his residence.

At the time, Giriraj was away, but his family members were present, according to the First Information Report (FIR) registered in connection with the case on Sunday. The gang questioned the residents about the money kept in the house, insisting that they had credible information about large sums stored there.

They then located a bag in the kitchen containing cash that Giriraj is said to have withdrawn for the purchase of land. After confirming that the homeowner was not present, the gang seized the bag, along with gold ornaments, before fleeing from the spot.

On receiving the complaint, the Yelahanka police launched a probe. CCTV footage from the area is being examined to trace the suspects and their vehicle, according to sources. Preliminary investigation suggests the gang had prior knowledge of the cash stored in the house with the police suspecting the involvement of people acquainted with Giriraj in the crime.

Multiple teams have been formed to nab those involved in the robbery, the police said.
