In an important development for the Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project (BSRP), Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Company (KRIDE) has awarded Rs 501-crore contract to Nagarjuna Construction Company (NCC) for constructing eight stations under Package C2A of Corridor 2. As per the contract, the project has to be completed within 24 months.

Corridor 2 connects Benniganahalli to Chikkabanavar, covering a distance of 25km, and comprising 8.02 km of elevated track and 17.55 km at grade. The corridor includes 12 stations, divided into two packages: C2A and C2B.

Package C2A involves the construction of eight stations, including civil, structural, and architectural works, along with plumbing, facade, and electrical and mechanical (E&M) installations.

The stations under this package are Benniganahalli (elevated interchange), Kasturi Nagar (at grade), Seva Nagar (at grade), Banaswadi (at grade), Nagawara (elevated), Kanaka Nagar (elevated), Hebbal (at grade) and Mathikere (elevated)

The scope of work includes the construction of steel foot overbridges, roof structures, pre-engineered buildings (PEB), and detailed design and engineering (DDC) for allied works.

The remaining four stations — Yeshwanthpur, Shettyahalli, Mydarahalli, and Chikkabanavara — are part of Package C2B, for which tenders will follow a separate process.

Nagarjuna Construction Company emerged the lowest bidder pushing behind Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) and J. Kumar Infra Projects Ltd in the tender for Package C2A that was floated on June 15, last year.

KRIDE finalised the process by issuing the Letter of Acceptance (LoA) to NCC Ltd on December 31, 2024.

According to N Manjula, managing director of K-RIDE, there are 62 cases of encroachments along this corridor, primarily involving private buildings and other unauthorised structures on the railway land, causing bottlenecks in the development process. The civil works tender for Corridor 2 was awarded to L&T Limited in August 2022.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka government has agreed to procure rolling stock for BSRP on an equity share model with the central government. The move comes after KRIDE failed to secure any secure any contract for the rolling stock on the PPP model (Public Private Partnership).

While the Karnataka government has written to the Railway Board to approve the same, the Centre is yet to accord them.
