A new model road project is being implemented in Bengaluru’s Peenya Industrial Area. This project is being funded by a private company, Radiall, under its CSR initiative and executed by city-based PotHoleRaja in collaboration with Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

Notably, PotHoleRaja is a social venture that works to improve road infrastructure in different cities of the country.

According to PotHoleRaja, the model road will have an efficient drainage system that will prevent flooding during monsoons, and utility trenches for cross-wiring will be constructed to avoid disruption of any public utility services. Clear and visible road markings, as well as reflectors, will be installed to ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians. Further, the roads will be made disabled-friendly with footpaths that are on the same level, with no breaks in between.

Sourabh Kumar, director of PotHoleRaja, said that in the later phase, 24/7 CCTV surveillance will be set up to monitor the security of the model road. He added that a similar project was earlier executed from Dasarahalli Junction to ABB-Wistron Road connecting TVS Junction, Peenya.

Elaborating on the project, he told indianexpress.com: “The bhoomi puja of the model road project was held on March 27, at NTTF Road, Peenya, near Radiall Factory. The current length of the road that we are doing is roughly around 350 metres. Special materials are being used for the footpath and alternative materials may be used for the railings also. So, the footpath which is usually done using steel mesh reinforcement will be done using GridMats reinforcement.

“Made from recycled polypropylene, GridMats are placed above the bedding layer and packed with different filling options, creating a permanent, flat, high-quality surface in less than half the time, and at 20-25 per cent lower cost. Through Gridmats, the intent is to use plastic waste to make long-lasting and sustainable roads/pavements.”
