The Bengaluru police on Thursday arrested Usha Kiran, the principal of Wisdom English School, after she allegedly caned a student of Class 5, leaving visible marks on the child’s legs and hands.
According to the complaint filed by the student’s father, his daughter came home on Wednesday with bruises and welts on her arms and legs, which she said were the result of being hit with a cane by the principal. “When she returned home from school that evening, I noticed marks on her body. She told us she was beaten up by the principal,” he recounted in his complaint to the Vijayapura police.
Kiran has been charged under the Juvenile Justice Act and Section 115 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). In an initial statement, the girl’s father alleged that Kiran frequently asked students to assist her specially-abled son, who also attends the school. “The principal often assigns her son’s tasks to other students, which they sometimes refuse. On Wednesday, my daughter and another student refused to do this work, and that’s when she punished them physically,” he alleged.
Disturbed by her daughter’s injuries, the girl’s mother went to the school, located in Devanahalli, seeking clarification from the staff. “I asked the teachers why my child was beaten so harshly, but no one could provide an answer or explain why this happened,” she said.
Before her arrest, Kiran reportedly said that she had lost her temper. She stated that she had been angered by what she perceived as mistreatment of her son by some students in the class. “We have a specially-abled child in the school, and I was informed that some students were discriminating against him. I lost my temper upon hearing this, and I used a cane on two students. I realize now it was wrong,” Kiran explained.
When questioned about why she hadn’t spoken to the children’s parents or informed them about the situation beforehand, Kiran conceded it was a lapse in judgment. “I admit it was a mistake not to communicate with the parents about what I believed was happening. I should have handled the situation differently,” she added.
