The Baiyappanahalli-K R Puram Metro segment may tentatively start operations by July 15 and the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) Limited plans to conduct trail runs on this 2-km stretch from the first week of July.
The stretch on the Purple Line was delayed because the BMRCL had to install an open web girder above the Indian Railways tracks near Baiyappanahalli.
BMRCL managing director Anjum Parvez said, “We are targeting to start the trial runs from July first week and planning to start the operations by mid-July. Although the track work is completed, the major signalling work and other parallel works are pending. Following this, the metro rail safety commissioner should inspect the stretch.”
The link, having one stop at Jyothinagar, will connect the Kengeri-Byappanahalli corridor (25.7 km) to the Whitefield-K R Puram stretch (13.7 km), inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March.
The Whitefield-K R Puram stretch currently carries around 28,000 passengers on average daily. However, by connecting the missing link, BMRCL expects a spike in ridership from 75,000 to 1 lakh per day. This is after accounting for the ridership of Kengeri to Whitefield, and Majestic to Whitefield. Once the missing link is connected, the journey between Kengeri and Whitefield is expected to take around 60-70 minutes.
