Bengaluru is expected to see a return to cooler weather from January 17 to 19 with the minimum temperatures predicted in the range of 15 to 16 degree Celsius. The minimum temperature on Friday is likely to be around 14.3 degree Celsius.
Earlier this week, the city witnessed a spell of warm weather on account of cloudy skies during the Makar Sankranti festival.
“Over interior Karnataka, there is likely to be a fall in minimum temperature by 2-3 degree Celsius from 17.01.2025 to 22.01.2025,” stated the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its forecast for the next five days.
At the start of the current week – where Makar Sankranti was celebrated on January 14 – Bengaluru saw a marked increase in the minimum temperatures over the normal of 15.8 degree Celsius recorded in the city in January.
The minimum temperature in the city on Sunday was at 20 degree Celsius, over four degree above normal
The warm weather was attributed to the cloudy skies over the city which resulted in light rain in many parts of the city earlier in the week.
Bengaluru witnessed chilly weather in the first week of January as a cold wave sweeped northern India and chilly winds swept down south. The minimum temperatures on January 3 and 4 went down to 12 degree Celsius with night temperatures going further below in some of the more open parts of the city.
The lowest minimum temperature ever recorded in Bengaluru was 7.8 degree Celsius on January 13 in 1884 as per the IMD’s records. The lowest temperatures recorded in the city in January in the last 15 years is 12 degree Celsius on January 16, 2012 and 12.3 degrees on January 15, 2019.
In December too, the extreme cold wave conditions in north India resulted in severe cold wave conditions in parts of north Karnataka between December 15 and 20.
Bengaluru recorded a minimum temperature of 12.4 degree Celsius on December 16 which was lower than the lowest minimum temperature of 12.8 degree Celsius recorded for over a decade on December 24, 2011.
