Television actress Sumona Chakravarti, who is famously known for playing comedian Kapil Sharma’s wife on his shows, said people still believe that she is married to the comedian in real life. In an exclusive conversation with SCREEN, Sumona shared the kind of impact the show had on her life and career, with people recognising her across the world. She shared it was because of her association with Kapil Sharma show for ten years that helped her buy her first and only house in Mumbai.
Sumona was part of Kapil Sharma’s show since 2013 when the comedian first came on the scene. Eventually, the show shifted from Colors to Sony TV, and Sumona continued to play Kapil’s wife. In turn, people who watched their show regularly believed that they were married for real. Recalling a funny incident, Sumona told SCREEN, “Even after his (Kapil’s) marriage, whenever I have travelled, I had a few people congratulating me. In fact, at his wedding, people said, ‘Shadi Mubaraq’. I used to be like, ‘I am sorry, did y’all not read his wedding invite? Are y’all gatecrashing his wedding? Why would you congratulate me?'”
Something similar happened when she went out for her morning run. She said, “I had these group of people whispering, ‘Kapil ki biwi’.” She said this happens because in television, actors get popular by the character they are playing.
In the same conversation, Sumona called the show a double-edged sword. She shared, “It has given me a lot and yet its been a double-edged sword. The show was a good ten years for me. It is a very long time. I was financially stable. I come from a very simple middle-class Bengali family. I could afford to buy a house in Mumbai because of that show. I am very grateful. Financial freedom for women today is very important.”
She added, “It is also the immense love and popularity that the show has given me across the world.” Sumona shared while Indians across the world recognise her through the show, she is also quite popular in Thailand. She shared, “The show has been dubbed in Thai. I was at a Thai restaurant, and it so happened that my local Indian-Thai friend came to me and said, ‘All the server and host want to take a picture with you.’ They were all Thai. I wondered why, then they showed me the show’s clip. It was ridiculously funny to watch me speaking Thai in the show.”
Sumona Chakravarti began her career as a child artist. After doing a couple of roles in television series and movies including Aamir Khan-starrer Mann, the actress rose to fame with the 2011 show Bade Achhe Lagte Hain. In 2012, she took part in Kahani Comedy Circus Ki alongside Kapil Sharma and they emerged as the show’s winner. In 2013, she joined Kapil Sharma’s comedy show and their professional relationship was visible until the show aired on Sony TV. However, the actress didn’t return on the show after it went on Netflix as The Great Indian Kapil Show.
She shared she was never approached for Netflix show and she isn’t close to Kapil outside work.
