After facing many controversies, the Vijay-starrer Leo is releasing in cinemas on Thursday, and the film’s first day’s box office collections look impressive, according to early reports. As per industry tracker Sacnilk, the film is expected to earn Rs 68 crore nett on the first day across the country. Rajinikanth’s Jailer, which was released in August, made Rs 44.5 crore on its opening day.
In Tami Nadu, the film is expected to earn Rs 32 crore gross and in Kerala, the film is expected to bring in Rs 12.50 crore gross. In Andhra Pradesh-Telangana belt, the film is expected to bring in Rs 17 crore gross and the Karnataka collections are expected to be around Rs 14.5 crore gross. The occupancy rate is the highest in Tamil Nadu at 86.35%. The film has almost 1176 shows in Chennai. Overall, the gross collections in India are expected at around Rs 80 crore with the worldwide numbers going up to Rs 145 crore.
Trade analyst Ramesh Bala had previously predicted that the film could make Rs 100 crore worldwide on the opening day. He told indianexpress.com, “In India, I predict there is a chance of it doing Rs 70 crore on day one. Worldwide, it might do Rs 100 crore on the opening day, based on the current estimation.”
Leo could possibly become the biggest Tamil release of the year, but the film is not going to enjoy a great run in the Hindi belt. Multiplexes in North India will not be releasing Leo because of the film’s OTT window. The Tamil Nadu film association currently has four-week OTT window but this is a problem for North Indian multiplex chains as the OTT window in this side of the country is eight weeks.
Vijay was last seen in Varisu, which was released earlier this year, and made Rs 26.5 crore on its opening day. The film faced off against Ajith’s Thunivu, which also managed to make Rs 26 crore. Varisu ended its box office run with Rs 297.55 crore worldwide gross.
Ever since the release of its first poster, Leo has been surrounded by controversies. With no early morning shows and a delayed release for Telugu dubbed version, Leo has had a tough journey so far. The film did not have a customary audio launch event, and so, Vijay’s fans missed out on a chance to see their favourite star in person. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Leo also stars Trisha Krishnan and Sanjay Dutt, and is rumoured to be a part of the filmmaker’s shared cinematic universe, which also includes Vikram and Kaithi.
