Vijay Deverakonda and Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s Telugu-language romantic drama Kushi experienced an expected decline in box office revenue on its first Monday, after a solid opening weekend. The film made Rs 15 crore on day one, followed by Rs 9.9 crore on Saturday and Rs 10 crore on Sunday. On Monday, the film made Rs 4 crore, according to industry tracker Sacnilk.
Kushi has made Rs 39 crore nett so far across India, with the film’s gross worldwide collections standing at Rs 56 crore currently. The Telugu version registered a meek 20% occupancy on Monday, with night shows commanding the most interest at 24%, and morning shows drawing the fewest crowds, with just 17% occupancy. Telugu occupancy in Mumbai and Delhi ranged from 10% to 11%, but Kakinada registered a region-best occupancy of 48%. Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam also drew strong crowds.
Surprsingly, the Tamil-language occupancy was slightly higher on Monday, at 22%. While Chennai registered a 27% occupancy, Puducherry was at a strong 69%. Vijay’s biggest hit remains Geetha Govindam, which made Rs 130 crore. Samantha and Vijay also starred in Mahanati, which was led by Keerthi Suresh, and made more than Rs 80 crore.
Both Vijay and Samantha, as well as director Shiva Nirvana, were coming off disappointing ventures. Vijay last starred in the action drama Liger, which was designed to appeal to a pan-India audience, but failed both critically and commercially. Samantha delivered two back-to-back solo flops, Yashoda and Shaakuntalam. She last worked with Shiva Nirvana on Maijili, which also starred her ex-husband Naga Chaitanya.
Kushi is also being sold as a pan-India release, with dubbed versions in Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam. The film has received mixed reviews, with the Indian Express stating, “All actors are seasoned performers and have done their best. It is the writing that doesn’t go to the depths the film’s premise might offer. Samantha’s character definitely deserved more voice and screen space.”
