Jolly LLB 3 movie review: Akshay Kumar, Arshad Warsi combine forces to deliver the weakest film of the franchise

Jolly LLB 3 Movie Review & Rating: Jolly LLB 3 has two Jollys, Jagdishwar Mishra (Akshay Kumar) and Jagdish Tyagi (Arshad Warsi), for the price of one, facing off in and out of a Delhi court. Their initial rivalry, spread over the first half, predictably rolls over into the two joining hands against the victims of a huge land fraud perpetrated by greedy land-grabbers, and their partners.

There’s a surprisingly strong anti-establishment streak in this third part of the legal comedy-drama franchise, reminding you of the kind of thing that Hindi mainstream cinema would routinely do back in the day. One the one side are poor farmers being pushed out of their homes by stealth and ill-gotten wealth; on the other are rapacious builders like Haribhai Khetan (Gajraj Rao) and their powerful network of accomplices, including the sarpanch, local judges and so on.

But this element is weighed down by the slow-paced skirmishes between the two Jollys, in a film which feels too long even as it begins. A couple of suicides by a farmer and his daughter-in-law in a Rajasthan tehsil become the catalyst for an elderly lady (Seema Biswas) to arrive in Delhi, along with two goats and a steely will. Will she get justice, and will the two Jollys find their conscience along the way?

The franchise’s most popular star, Saurabh Shukla as Judge Sundar Lal, is still the best part of the film, lifting the lax, verbose proceedings. This time around, he has discovered the joys of a trim waistline, a dating app, and swiping right, resulting in a laugh-out-loud flirtation with a good-looking female cop (Shilpa Shukla). Neither Huma Qureshi nor Amrita Rao, on screen after a long gap, get anything to do: why have them in the film in the first place?

Gajraj Rao gets to look shifty and grind his teeth. Ram Kapoor plays his suave lawyer who keeps getting whistled up by a certain ‘VM’ in London, the reference to a fugitive businessman being as clear as a bell. A dharna and a shooting in the village in question leads to the climactic battle in court, where both Jollys take turns in delivering long, heavy speeches laden with facts and figures, and Biswas gets the most melodramatic scene of her life.

I really enjoyed Jolly LLB part 2. But in this one, the story-telling is at its most basic, and it is far and away the weakest part of the franchise.
