After a slow start, Akshay Kumar-starrer Sarfira saw a jump in its box office earning on Saturday and Sunday, but the film still remains one of the lowest openers of the star in recent times. Sarfira’s box office fate will be decided by whether it can pass the Monday test. While the Sudha Kongara directorial witnessed a jump of 70% on its second day (Saturday) by collecting Rs 4.50 crore, on its third day (Sunday) the film saw a growth of another 20%, collecting Rs 5.50 crore. The box office collection of Sarfira, inspired by the life of Capt. Gopinath — founder of Deccan Airlines — earned a total of Rs 12.50 crore India net in its first weekend. Only Selfiee managed a lower opening weekend (Rs 10.3 cr) than Sarfira among all of recent Akshay Kumar movies.
Sarfira had an overall occupancy of 26.46% in the Hindi belt on Sunday, with around 41.55% crowd showing up for the evening show compared to morning and night. The film, according to Sacnilk, mostly did well in cities like Chennai with an occupancy of 40.75%, followed by Pune (33.50 %), Ahmedabad (32.25 %), Bengaluru (29 %), Mumbai (28.25%), Lucknow (28%), and Jaipur (27.25%).
According to trade expert Taran Adarsh, the Akshay Kumar starrer continues to struggle despite earning praise and acclaim. According to him, the film will have to collect over Rs 3.5 crore on Monday to cover the shortfall since the Friday numbers were dismal. He added that Sarfira will have to score consistently until Thursday since Vicky Kaushal starrer Bad Newz is arriving on Friday.
Sarfira, which is the official Hindi remake of the Tamil film Soorarai Pottru (2020), earlier delivered the lowest opening day of his career in the last 15 years. The film opened at just Rs 2.5 crore, lesser than his previous releases Mission Raniganj (Rs 2.8 crore), Selfiee (Rs 2.55 crore), and Raksha Bandhan (Rs 8.2 crore), among others. The only two films that were profitable for Akshay Kumar post-pandemic are Sooryavanshi (2021) and OMG 2 (2023) out of his 14 releases since Laxmii in 2020.
According to India TV, Sarfira has been made on an overall budget of Rs 100 crore, all-inclusive of prints and advertising costs. The Akshay Kumar-starrer released against Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2 at the box office, which opened at Rs 25.6 crore, followed by a collection of Rs 18.2 crore and Rs 15.1 crore on its day 2 and 3, respectively. So far, the film has collected Rs 58.9 crore, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. The film, directed by S Shankar, is reportedly made on a budget of Rs 250 crore. It needs to be seen if the Akshay Kumar starrer passes the Monday test and maintains the growth in the box office collection.
