Guest List: 25 Persons
The limit on guests at a marriage or a funeral was reduced to 25 from 100 under the Guest Control Order in the Union Territory of Delhi. A spokesperson of the Delhi administration said this was to ensure greater austerity in marriages.
Police Behaviour
Union Home Minister Brahmananda Reddy wrote to the chief ministers to ensure that the police eschewed needless violence and excesses and improved its image with the people. “The habit of colonial days when the police beat up innocent citizens without rhyme or reason is also no more,” Reddy wrote. As part of an eight-point agenda suggested to CMs to improve the image of the force, Reddy wrote, “Superintendents of police and other supervisory officers should be told that it is their personal responsibility to ensure that the police under their command behave in a humane manner.” He also said public complaints against police excess should be dealt with firmly.
Rethink Censorship
Prime Minister Indira Gandhi hoped that press censorship may be relaxed. Replying to a question, she said: “Personally, I am not for censorship at all, but the home and information and broadcasting ministries have their own difficulties.”
Badshah Khan
The PM expressed concern at the treatment meted out to Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan in Pakistan. “I feel concerned because he was part of our freedom movement,” she said in an interview to Blitz.
Push For Hindi
The Centre decided to set up three subcommittees to examine the progressive use of Hindi in Central government offices and PSUs. MoS for home, Om Mehta, said Hindi Salhakar Samitis had been set up in every ministry to promote Hindi in official work.
