India and Britain unequivocally condemned and declared that the two countries would not allow the misuse of their territories for destabilising other polities. Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and his British counterpart, Maragaret Thatcher expressed these views at a banquet hosted by the latter. Gandhi, who arrived in London on a two-day state visit, said that India and Britain had both suffered much from terrorism.
Pak’s uranium
The Pakistan President, Zia-ul-Haq, has said Pakistan has acquired the uranium enrichment capability “not only for making a bomb, but also for peaceful purposes”. In an interview to be published in the next issue of The Week, Gen Zia said, “In a peaceful nuclear programme or in any nuclear programme, you can convert it into a non-peaceful one anytime you like. It is within one’s capability.”
ENLF terms
The ceasefire between the Tamil militants and the Sri Lanka government could be consolidated only if the Eelam National Liberation Front’s (ENLF) 10-point demands were accepted, an ENLF spokesman said. The spokesman said the situation was very fluid in the absence of a clear-cut agreement regarding the truce. Leaders of the ENLF will meet in Madras in a day or two to decide on their stand on the committee to monitor the ceasefire.
