Inspector Rattan Chand Sharda, head of the criminal investigation agency at Phagwara in Kapurthala district of Punjab, was shot dead by two unidentified youths, alleged to be extremists. Sharda was shot dead in his office situated on Phagwara-Banga road, about 100 yards away from the city police station. He is survived by his wife, daughters and two sons. Rajinder Kumar Sharda, a son of the deceased, was to be betrothed that day.
The government has decided to import over one million tonnes of rice to meet any eventuality arising on account of the drought prevalent in the country for the last three years. The government, which has been thinking of large-scale rice exports, has been forced to take a decision to import rice to keep up a buffer stock. Two senior officers of the Food Ministry, B C Gangopadhya, secretary, Ministry of Food, and S V Sastry, Joint secretary and financial advisor of the ministry, have been sent to Australia to strike a deal.
