The second part of master director Mani Ratnam’s epic action film Ponniyin Selvan is marching forward, breaking all sorts of collection records. According to reports, the film continues to draw crowds to theatres even on weekdays and its domestic collection currently stands at Rs 114.75 crore.
Released alongside its Hindi, Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam dubbed versions, the film has, according to news agency PTI, raised over Rs 200 crore at the worldwide box office.
Although many promotional videos for Ponniyin Selvan: II have impressed the audience, the latest one, which features all the major actors, has completely astounded the fans.
Recently, in a bid to ensure maximum promotion for the film, which was made with a reported budget of Rs 500 crore, actors Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram, Trisha, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Sobhita Dhulipala and Aishwarya Lekshmi took part in a game organised by Star Sports in line with the ongoing IPL tournament.
During the friendly game, titled Idioms Challenge, the actors were asked to guess the meaning of certain Hindi phrases. Though the actors, especially Vikram, pretended in the beginning that their Hindi knowledge was minimal, all the stars did surprisingly well and gave the viewers another opportunity to enjoy their cuteness and their stunning chemistry with each other.
As soon as the anchor asked the cast what “sau sunaar ki ek lohaar ki” meant, Vikram immediately responded with superstar Rajinikanth’s iconic dialogue from the Tamil gangster film Baashha (1995) that goes “naan oru thadava sonna, nooru thadava sonna madhiri (If I say something once, it is equal to saying it a hundred times).” As “sau sunaar ki ek lohaar ki” can be translated as “one powerful blow is comparable to a hundred smaller blows”, team PS-II won that round and went for a second question.
“What does ‘dil bagh bagh hona’ mean,” the anchor asked. Though that one seemed to be a headscratcher for most, Aishwarya answered without missing a beat: “The heart has become like a garden”. Jayam Ravi illustrated the meaning by saying, “Aishwarya Rai maam ke saath kaam karke dil bagh bagh hogaya (I was extremely happy to work with Aishwarya maam).”
The cast took one more question before winding up the two-and-a-half-minute promotional video.
Touted as one of the most expensive Tamil movies ever made, the film chronicles the story of the early days of Arulmozhivarman (Jayam Ravi), one of the most powerful kings in the south who went on to become the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I. Ponniyin Selvan: II is currently in running in theatres.
