After ‘Lady Superstar’ Nayanthara slammed filmmaker-actor Dhanush for refusing to give her a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to use songs from the film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in their upcoming Netflix documentary, her husband (and the film’s director) Vignesh Shivan took to social media to offer his two cents on the controversy. In her open letter, Nayanthara shared that Dhanush sent them a legal notice for having used a three-seconds-long behind-the-scenes video from the sets of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, which he produced, and has demanded Rs 10 crore for it after refusing to acknowledge their requests for two years. Now, Vignesh has shared the controversial music clip on his Instagram Story, writing, “The 10 crores clip that wants to be taken down from our Netflix documentary. Please watch it here for free.”
Vignesh also shared a three-page notice sent to them by Dhanush’s team after the clip appeared in the documentary’s trailer.
Nayanthara is gearing up for the release of her Netflix documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale. The documentary will explore her love story with Vignesh Shivan. The actor-director first met for the film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. It was a film written and directed by Vignesh and produced under Dhanush’s banner Wunderbar. Nayanthara and Vignesh’s love blossomed on the sets of the film. After dating for several years, the couple tied the knot in 2022. To celebrate the their love story, the couple wanted to use elements from their first collaboration, but Dhanush refused to grant them an NOC. After battling with him for two years, the couple gave up on it and edited out the songs and lyrics for the final release, scheduled for November 18.
However, a glimpse of the BTS video is used in the documentary’s trailer, which was released a week ago. Dhanush allegedly slapped the couple with a legal notice, and demanding Rs 10 crore. On Saturday, Nayanthara broke her silence and exposed the actor in a long two and half page note, where she also accused Dhanush of harbouring a personal grudge against her and Vignesh.
The controversy seemingly dates back to the time when Nayanthara received the Best Actress Filmfare Award for her performance in Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. During her acceptance speech, the actor revealed that Dhanush ‘hated’ her performance in the film.
Nayanthara alluded to this in her statement, and wrote, “I have not forgotten all the horrible things that you said about the film that was one of your biggest hits as a producer and a film that is loved by all even today. The words you said pre-release have left some unbeatable scars to us already. I learnt through film circles that your ego was supremely hurt after the film became a blockbuster. Your displeasure over its success was perceptible even to common man through award functions connected with this film (Filmfare 2016).”
Previously, the couple credited Dhanush for playing cupid for them as it was his film that sparked their love story.
