Kanguva box office collection Day 1: It was impossible to miss the hype train for Suriya’s Kanguva over the past few days. The makers left no stone unturned in making it of the biggest successes of Tamil cinema, and even sold it as the industry’s answer to gargantuan Telugu blockbusters like Baahubali and RRR. It was with these expectations that the Siva directorial hit the screens on November 14. However, the results have failed to match the hype. According to Sacnilk, the day one collections of the film in the domestic market are approximately Rs 22 crore.

The Tamil version of the film made Rs 13.65 crore, with the Hindi and Telugu versions adding Rs 3.25 crore and Rs 5 crore, respectively. The film started off with a bump, with issues surrounding how early it could be screened in the day. However, Kanguva failed to capitalise on the hype due to scheduling conflicts in Tamil Nadu with many theatres opening the bookings rather late on November 13, as revenue sharing details were still being ironed out. This issue saw the audience occupancy for the film hovering around a dismal 37.25 percent on day one. Considering the elaborate promotion drive that the team carried out in the Northern states of India, it was disappointing to note that the film only had 11.47 percent for its Hindi version, despite having almost 1000 shows in 3D. The occupancy for the regular 2D version stood at 12.64%.
The mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike didn’t help Kanguva‘s cause. But the film still managed to deliver one of the top five debuts for Tamil cinema this year. With Rs 13.65 crore, Kanguva came in fifth place behind GOAT, Vettaiyan, Amaran, and Indian 2.
The film will require a major uptick in numbers to survive the weekend, considering its humongous budget and large ambitions. With music by Devi Sri Prasad and cinematography by Vetri, Kanguva stars an ensemble cast, including the likes of Bobby Deol and Disha Patani in their Tamil debuts, Yogi Babu, Redin Kingsley, Vasundhara, and Bose Venkat.
