Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s much-anticipated film Thug Life went on floors on Wednesday. Raaj Kamal Films International took to X to announce that the shooting has begun with a promo video featuring the posters of all the cast members from the film.
Co-produced by Raaj Kamal Films International, Red Giant Pictures, and Madras Talkies, Thug Life also stars Dulquer Salmaan, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Gautham Karthik, and Joju George in important roles.
The promo of the film has created a lot of discussion around the period, genre, and setting of the film. An exclusive stunt sequence was shot for the promo, which featured Kamal Haasan with long hair fighting a gang of heavily armed people who are stand-ins for death. The actor broke the fourth wall and said that his name is Rangaraja Shaktivel Nayakar from Kayalpatti. The aesthetics of the promo hinted at a dystopian film, but the makers are tight-lipped about the story and other details.
Recently, talking about Thug Life at the Bigg Boss Tamil Season 7 finale, Kamal Haasan said that Raaj Kamal Films is particular about the quality of their productions more than profit and that’s why it has taken more than 35 years for him to team up with Mani Ratnam after Nayakan. “If I liked a story, he didn’t like it. And if he liked it, I didn’t. If both of us liked it, some other problems arose. So, it has taken these many years to finally come up with something that we both liked.”
Meanwhile, the state of Kamal Haasan’s film with director H Vinoth is unknown. Thug Life was first called KH234, marking Kamal’s 234th film. On the other hand, Kamal-H Vinoth’s film was tentatively called KH233. While Thug Life has already gone on floors, it is not clear when KH233 will be launched. Fans are already wondering if it would join the long list of Kamal Haasan’s dropped projects.
