Actor Kamal Haasan was conspicuously absent from the funeral of actor Sarath Babu, which was held in Chennai on Tuesday. Kamal had earlier tweeted, “A great actor and a great friend, Sarathbabu, has passed away. The days of acting with him are a shadow in my mind. Introduced by my Gurunath in Tamil. He excelled in many timeless roles. The cinema has lost a good actor. My tribute to him #RIPSarathBabu #SarathBabu.” However, the actor couldn’t make it to the funeral, which raised eyebrows. Now, the Tamil superstar’s niece Suhasini Maniratnam has revealed the reason behind his absence.
“About ten members from Raaj Kamal Films International are currently here helping with everything. Kamal couldn’t make it because he is at Indian 2 shooting. He just spoke to the family of Sarath Babu. He said not to mistake him. He couldn’t come out because he was in the look from the film and it should not be out. From day 1, he wanted to save Sarath Babu somehow. Both Rajini sir and Kamal sir had told that they would do everything for the treatment of Sarath Babu. Rajini sir attended the funeral. But Kamal apologised for not making it to the event,” Suhasini said.
Kamal Haasan and Sarath Babu, who have worked with K Balachander, shared screen space in films like Sagara Sangamam, Sattam, and Idi Katha Kaadu. They were last seen together in the movie Aalavandhan (2001).
Sarathkumar, Raadikaa, Suriya, and Karthi were among many celebrities who attended the funeral in Chennai.
Sarath Babu passed away on Monday due to multiple-organ failure. He was 71.
