Jailer actor, director G Marimuthu dies while dubbing for TV show, shocked Rajinikanth calls him ‘a wonderful person’

Actor and director G Marimuthu, who shot to fame with the popular Tamil television serial ‘Ethir Neechal’, reportedly succumbed to a heart attack Friday. He was 57. The actor recently appeared in Rajinikanth-starrer Jailer.

As per sources, he did a dubbing session for a serial on Friday and experienced uneasiness which caused him to return home. Marimuthu’s body was kept at a private hospital at Vadapalani in Chennai before being taken to his residence in Virugambakkam.

Speaking to Sun News, Tamil serial actor Kamalesh, who reportedly last saw him on Thursday, said Marimuthu was dubbing at a studio in Vadapalani when he experienced some uneasiness. “He finished his half of the dubbing work and left the studio saying he felt suffocated. We thought he would be standing outside to get some fresh air, but he did not return to the studio for a long time. When we went and checked outside, he was not there. He had left in his car. I called his daughter who informed me that he was admitted to Suriya Hospital. When we went there, we learnt that he is no more. This is a huge loss,” he said.

Marimuthu, who began his career in the Tamil film Industry as an assistant director, had worked in several films including actor Ajith Kumar’s blockbuster film ‘Aasai’, directed by Vasanth Sai. He had also worked for years as an assistant to national-award-winning poet Vairamuthu.

His death has come as a shock to the Tamil film industry. Many paid condolences and remembered Marimuthu including Rajinikanth who acted with him in Jailer. The superstar took to Twitter and wrote, “Marimuth is a wonderful person. His death shocked me. My heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family (sic).”


Nelson Dilipkumar, who directed him in Jailer, tweeted, “Saddened!! Rest in peace #Marimuthu sir ! Remembering the times with you…”


Vijay Sethupathi, who acted with Marimuthu in Vikram expressed his condolences in a tweet.


Radhika Sarathkumar wrote, “So sad and shocked to hear of his passing of #marimuthu have worked with him a man with talent , gone so soon. Condolences to his family.”


Sun Pictures also tweeted, “Condolences! Your work has been impeccable and irreplaceable. Rest in peace #Marimuthu.”

Actor Arun Vijay wrote, “Shocking to hear the demise of #Marimuthu sir.. Nice actor & a person gone too soon.. My heartfelt condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace…”

He directed a few Tamil films like ‘Kannum Kannum’ and ‘Pulivaal’ and acted in several supporting roles over the years.

‘Pariyerum Perumal’ and ‘Vikram’ are some of the popular films he appeared in recently. In ‘Ethirneechal’, directed by V Thiruselvam, his negative character ‘Adhi Gunasekaran’ proved to be a massive hit among the audience. His dialogue “Emma Aei” in the serial is iconic in Tamil pop culture. He was last seen in superstar Rajinikanth’s ‘Jailer’.

The actor is survived by his wife M Bagiyalakshmi, son Akhilan and daughter Aishwarya.
