Despite being one of the most celebrated and exceptional actors in contemporary Tamil cinema, “Chiyaan” Vikram acknowledges that while being a film star is challenging, it’s even more difficult being a global icon like Rajinikanth, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan, as they are constantly under scrutiny. “It’s difficult to be an actor, but to be someone like Rajini sir, Aishwarya Rai or Amitabh Bachchan is even more difficult because you’re constantly under the microscope and have to put your best foot forward all the time,” Vikram said during a recent interview with Ranveer Allahbadia on his YouTube channel BeerBiceps.
“Now that everyone has a phone with a camera, even if you’ve been an angel the entire day, that one moment where you say, ‘Hey, sorry, one second’ (maybe by moving someone aside to proceed forward) can become the thing with people saying, ‘See what he did!’ It’s harsh. You need to have a persona where you’re not faking it but are conscious of it: ‘This is how it is.’ Or you shouldn’t be an actor. It’s a huge price to pay, but what you gain is even bigger. Nobody asked you to be an actor. You could have had your privacy, lived your life in isolation and nobody would have even looked at you,” he added.
Vikram also mentioned that he is more conscious about privacy when with his family since he needs to respect their boundaries. “When I’m alone, I’m cool; I can do anything. My main concern is when I’m with my family because I don’t want their pictures out — they have their own lives. Once their pictures are out, they can’t go anywhere. My wife still goes out in autorickshaws and my children take walks. But nobody knew them until recently. When I’m with them, I make sure nobody notices me; I stay fully hidden so that nobody recognises me,” Vikram said.
The actor is currently basking in the success of his action adventure film Thangalaan, helmed by Pa Ranjith. The film has already entered the Rs 100 crore club, besides opening to positive reviews. Thangalaan also stars Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan and Daniel Caltagirone in key roles.
In his review of the movie, The Indian Express’ Avinash Ramachandran wrote, “Pa Ranjith conjures up a familiar world with familiar beats but gives it a neo-magical touch that reimagines the plight of the oppressed by giving their thoughts a platform, and meaning to their suffering.”
