It is pointless to engage in a debate about who is the better filmmaker between Lokesh Kanagaraj and Gautham Vasudev Menon. Both directors have showcased their exceptional skills in their respective eras, employing their unique artistic approaches. While Gautham is renowned for his romantic spectacles, Lokesh has established himself as a master of action films.
Although they may appear to have little in common, there is one factor that unites them: their shared affection for superstar Kamal Haasan. Over the years, both filmmakers have created movies that have become some of Kamal’s most successful ventures. Gautham’s neo-noir action crime thriller Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu (2006) is still regarded as one of Kamal’s most impactful and intense films. Similarly, Lokesh’s Vikram (2022) emerged as Kamal’s biggest hit in his career.
With the re-release of Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu on its 17th anniversary, an online debate has arisen, questioning who the biggest fan of Kamal Haasan is: Lokesh or Gautham. While some argue in favour of Gautham, others promptly rally behind Lokesh. Surprisingly, both filmmakers have joined the debate and shared their views, causing a social media frenzy in the process.
When a Twitterati said: “Looks like GVM @menongautham has won the battle for Best Fan Boy Director for me. Sorry to say this Lokesh @Dir_Lokesh bro,” Lokesh was quick to respond and noted: “Doubt ey venam bro GVM sir is 🫡 (There’s no need for any doubt bro, GVM sir is 🫡)”
However, the discussion didn’t conclude there, as Gautham also chimed in, acknowledging that he is no longer the most ardent fan. “‘Was’. Until you and ‘Nayagan meendum varaan’ came. #Vikram I have to try and rise above that. Will be a good challenge @Dir_lokesh. Aana Intha sandaiyila satta kizhiyaadhu… (But in this battle, no shirts will be torn) Only Love,” Gautham wrote on Twitter.
“Loads of love and respect to you sir! ❤️ Thrilled and exhilarated to see the response for the re-release of #VettaiyaaduVilaiyaadu film now, more love and power to our #Ulaganayagan @ikamalhaasan sir 🔥 #AnbeSivam,” Lokesh mentioned while quote-tweeting Gautham’s post.
According to reports, though it was a busy weekend in Tamil Nadu, Gautham Menon’s Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu received a grand welcome from cinephiles when its remastered version was re-released on June 23.
While Gautham is currently working on his much-delayed spy thriller Dhruva Natchathiram, Lokesh is getting ready with the Vijay-starrer Leo.
