Ufff Yeh Siyapaa movie review: A film scored by A R Rahman, no less, cannot, in all honesty, be called a silent film. It can also be a big reason for drawing us into a film labelled a silent comedy, because music is key to telling us what words cannot.
But looks can be deceptive. Let me warn you, this is two hours of drivel. How on God’s good earth did Rahman get inveigled into a project so vacuous? That’s a mystery which is destined to go unsolved; meanwhile, let me inflict upon you the misery I had to undergo.
A fellow called Kesari Lal Singh (Sohum Shah) who seems to have nothing to commend himself except an unlovely belly and large underpants adorned by two large-eared cloth rabbits likes to leer at pretty neighbour (Nora Fatehi), leaving wifey (Nushrratt Bharuccha) to simmer.
A packet of contraband lands up at the wrong address: how many times will this creaky plot point be pressed into service? It’s not just the said parcel; Kesari has other troubles. A dead body, resembling his dear wife, shows up in his living room.
There’s a cop (Omkar Kapoor) with a fat lip in a police-station populated with other smiling stiffs. Out of nowhere, a guy (Sharib Hashmi) in a blue boiler-suit shows up. So does a suitcase full of pink notes. All these characters are let loose in locations which don’t seem to have anything to do with each other; the disjointedness is not just part of the scenery, it is also part of the proceedings.

Someone must have thought they were doing a ‘Pushpak’ redux, that great film in which Kamal Hassan is utterly brilliant, each frame shining with smarts. Having no dialogues just means your vocal chords won’t be in play; who said anything about the brain?
As to Sohum Shah, is he the same actor who left such an impact in The Ship Of Theseus, and who played the lead so assuredly in Tumbaad? Whatever happened to him? Here his character, who gets major screen time, is just plain embarrassing, a bumbler obsessed with his own nether regions. I felt especially bad for the excellent Sharib who is left to wander through his witless film: what is he doing here? Bharuccha spends a lot of her time moaning and groaning. So do we, the viewers. Uff.
